Oh cool. If you can believe it, I've never been to Tucson :( Bonnie from the blog lives in Tucson. And there's another couple that's not actively blogging anymore from there. What puts you in West Africa?

My husband and I and 2 girls are missionaries with an organization that's involved with linguistic work. Been in west Africa since '92. Life is an adventure here and running keeps me sane! I'll check out Bonnie's blog. Thanks...being that you're in Queen creek I might have to mention that I'm a Wildcat fan :-)

Is that SF Marathon the NIke Wmns race? I would like to do that one someday.

Thanks snoqualmie! It was a hard workout. As far as the SF Marathon is concerned...I think the Nike Wmns race was this past April. The one I'm running is on July 25th and it's just the San Francisco Marathon! The April one sounds cooler. It's so hot and humid here right now...I long for some cool runs!

Wow! Those look more like VO2 max splits to me! Not MP running. You've got some speed for sure. The only time I've ever run that fast was in a 5K and I thought I was going to die.

By the way, just a thought - if I'm running, I count the walking miles in my total as well. I just hit the lap key to keep them separate. The running before and after each walk brings the physiological level of the walk breaks up to a slow jog level. That's my philosophy anyway. Good luck with your long run. :)

p.s. Is that your monkey or just a passerby?

From Barb on Sun, May 23, 2010 at 14:12:45 from 196.200.54.130

Hey Snow...thanks for the input. I changed my MP miles to VO2 max miles. These were actually about 10 seconds slower that last months fast miles. I figured it was because of humidity and heat (even though we run at 4:30 in the morning! I also added the walking break miles in to boost my mileage. The monkey is not ours but some friends that live in a village out in the middle of no where! The extent of wildlife in our yard is a water turtle.

Hey sno...was wondering what you do for tapering your mileage before a marathon. I plan on doing 26 miles this Sunday and then 29 miles around the 2nd of July (after we're in Holland where it will be cool! Woohoo!). Then the San Francisco Marathon will be on July 25th. Any recommendations or input would be greatly appreciated!

From Snoqualmie on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 11:08:56 from 24.18.192.33

In my earlier marathons, I followed the "book advice" with a classic 3 week taper. As I became more confident in my own judgment, I realized it was too much. After much experimentation, I have settled on a 2 week taper, with one week of slight reduction and some speedwork (one session), and the last week with a dramatic reduction but lots of MP running. So, short, intense runs. You can see over the next two weeks how I do that.

As for the weekends, the long run progression I like is: 23+, 20, 10 w/ mp, marathon.

I hope that helps. Some people don't lose fitness very fast, but I think I do. At the same time, I like my legs to feel really fresh on race day. I will usually have two days off completely right before the marathon.

You've got some big miles scheduled. That's going to give you amazing endurance I'm sure.

Is that nighttime running for you? This time of year, we have so much daylight in Washington State. But you reminded me of a time in 2007 (winter) when there was a massive power failure and we were out for 5 days. I tried to run, but even with a headlamp the darkness was scary-deep!

From Barb on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 12:59:40 from 196.200.54.130

I actually do all of my running in the dark because it's so blasted hot and humid here right now. I usually start my shorter runs (under 10) around 3:30 in the morning and the long runs around 2:30 in the morning. Even though we run early, it's still quite warm. This morning I ran at 3:30 and it was 82F outside with humidity of 68%. My running partner almost was hit by a moto carrying bread with a very weak headlight. Couldn't see us running.

I have another question for you. It seems that often the last 6 miles or so of my long runs I really lose all my steam. Don't know if it's related to hydrating or maybe not fueling enough while I'm running. I usually just drink water and also take Succeed S!CAPS since it's so humid and I perspire a lot, then I eat Luna Moons for snacking.

From Barb on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 13:11:18 from 196.200.54.130

hey sno...me again...just read your Wed entry and that Garmin thing sounds quite nice. Looked it up on the internet. How long have you had one of those? Is that how you track your miles as you run? Would you recommend it? Does it tell you what pace you're keeping as you're running?

From Snoqualmie on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 14:23:50 from 24.18.192.33

Hi Barb, I don't think I know enough about you (or enough period, lol) to answer about your fading in the long runs. I think it's natural to be running with more effort at the ends, but not really "losing all steam." I do quite well with distance, just not so much with speed, so long runs are the easy part for me. You could try easing up on the pace in the first half of the run, ie negative splits. Or even take a few walk breaks in the first half to keep your legs fresh. About the fueling (Luna moons), I'm not sure you want to get me started on that topic. I am a low carb runner, and take zero carbs with me on all runs and races. This is about the time people's eyes glaze over and the subject changes. lol

My Garmin 405 - LOVE IT! The 305 is basically the same except in size and shape, plus it uses button exclusively whereas the 405 has a touch-bezel for some functions. To quote JD, another great runner here on the blog, "I love it so much that I want to have it surgically attached to my arm." Kidding of course.

The Garmin is freedom - go anywhere you want and know your pace, distance, etc. It also has an awesome interval training program that will just beep at you when it's time to recover or run faster, programmable by time, distance, or a combination of the two. Worth every penny. It will display all kinds of cool info if you choose: directional heading, elevation, calories. I do not have the one with the heart rate monitor, but I hear it's very useful.

One caution: Garmins are fussy in my experience. Buy it from rei.com and you can hand it right back to them if anything bothers you, no questions asked. I'm actually on my 3rd watch. The first one, the buckle broke. The 2nd, it was doing inaccurate splits. I have an REI store 15 minutes away, so it's easy to just walk in - I didn't even have all the original box/instructions/doodads/etc. - and they hand me a brand new watch. So Garmin=great joy, but cover your bases and get it from REI.

From Barb on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 17:31:38 from 196.200.54.130

so, if you take no carbs with you on your long runs, you saying you don't eat at all? Hmmm, low carb runner meaning you don't eat many carbs ever? I'm curious if you don't mind getting a little started :-)

I think I just might look into one of those Garmin's as soon as I get stateside. I wonder if the GPS system would work in an unknown, unheard of country that's not very developed? I just may have to find out!

From Snoqualmie on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 20:56:52 from 24.18.192.33

My carb intake is under 50g per day, usually under 30. In other words, ketogenic. I am running on the same fuel as my prehistoric runner ancestors used. If you have read Born To Run (a great book, by the way!) you will be familiar with the recent research indicating humans evolved as runners. But grains, legumes and most modern fruits are a very recent addition to the human menu.

Here is a key article that the Born To Run author used: http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~skeleton/pdfs/2004e.pdf

And here is a fun little article about low carb running, written by a guy who tries to eat zero carbs: http://onyx-ii.com/starr-rhapsody/lowcarb/no_carb_runner.html

This one is an overview of why people started to think they needed massive carbs, and the fallacies involved: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/07/07/magazine/what-if-it-s-all-been-a-big-fat-lie.html

I guess the bottom line is that it is working just fine. I've been low carb since nearly the beginning of this year. One no-carb marathon down, another in less than 2 weeks. If I was going to fall apart from such low carbs, I think it would have happened by now. :)

From Barb on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 11:06:46 from 196.200.54.130

thanks for the info Sno. Interesting. I've been very 'athletic' my whole life and very conscious about what I eat, but I hadn't heard of the ketongenic, low carb way of eating. I will definitely look more into it, though, I big fall back for me is I need realistic food choices I can eat in that there just aren't a lot of 'supplements' available in Africa. We'll see...

Still curious, though, do you eat anything while you're running the long ones? Just water?

From Snoqualmie on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 18:53:33 from 166.205.141.204

I do not eat anything during long runs or during marathons. I have a 6 oz. fuel flask with a Nuun (electrolytes) tablet in it. C'est tout. And water of course.

As you are researching you may be interested in Googling "gluconeogenesis." That's how I make my own carbs.

Thanks for asking. Most people just roll their eyes and put me on their Weirdo List I think.

From Barb on Fri, May 28, 2010 at 03:42:08 from 196.200.54.130

thanks...I just may give the Nuun stuff a try on my next long run just to see...

I'll also take a look at gluconeogenesis on the internet. Noticed you threw some French in there...do you speak French. I live in a French speaking country.

From Snoqualmie on Fri, May 28, 2010 at 11:21:26 from 24.18.192.33

I did not know Mali was French-speaking! How lovely. I took 6 years of French in school, followed by over 30 years of trying to keep it up despite almost zero opportunities to practice. The only French place we've been is Quebec. Fortunately, they are extremely patient and are pleased if you even just make an effort.

Those were some nice paced miles this morning! Hope your throat feels better soon.

From Barb on Wed, Jun 09, 2010 at 16:56:04 from 196.200.54.130

Hey Sno...oh I'm smiling again. Well, I suppose you can walk out the door here and jump into MP w/o w/u because of the warm temperature, but that's not the situation here. The honest truth is that my partner is a 24 year old who doesn't understand that a 51 year old body needs to warm up! I tell her lets start out slow and work up to MP, but it just doesn't click, and then the competitive person in me can't just let her pull away...thus my lack of reasonable w/u time. I think for the marathon in July, I'll have to w/u a bit on my own before I get to the start line!

CL...throat does feel a bit better today (Wed). Took Wed off and will resume tomorrow. Gotta get those miles in for the week!

Bonnie...boy, been following your workouts and I'll be in that heat on July 15th. Not looking forward to that. Plan on getting my runs in very early in the mornings. SF Marathon is the 25th of July so I still have just over 6 weeks to go. About 10 more days here in Bamako, 7 days in Conakry, Guinea (actual home away from AZ), 14 days in Holland, then on to AZ.

Oh what a beautiful morning!  We had lots of rain yesterday afternoon and the place cooled off.  It's still humid, but at least much, much cooler.  Had a nice and easy w/u 11:10, 11:01, 10:39 then we took off on our bridge route over the Niger River.  Will probably be my last run over the Niger unless another unplanned event brings us back here.  So, it was a nostalgic run.  Kept a decent pace AP 9:31.

Today was a speed workout.  Warmed up a mile (11:31) then did 12 one mile repeats with about .15 mile walk in between each mile.  I was shooting for 30 seconds under MP per mile so target was 8:45.  It was extraordinarily humid this morning.  By the end of the workout I was literally sloshing in my shoes.  NO exaggeration.  Here are my mile splits:  9:34, 8:54, 8:42, 8:45, 8:50, 8:48, 8:48, 8:52, 8:48, 8:54, 8:59, 8:43.

Well, it was one of those days. First, I do get up quite early to run since it is quite hot and humid here. My running partner is stateside, so I run very close to home as I feel safer. I run along the "Niger River road".  The road parallels the river and goes between the "old" bridge and the "new" bridge.  These 2 bridges are the only way to get across the river to the major portion of Bamako.  Usually when I run (start somewhere between 3am and 4am) I may see a total of 6 cars.  Well, this morning I lost count after 50 cars as they closed the "old" bridge, I suppose for repairs.  On one of my repeats I saw vaguely in the distance what looked like a crowd of guys.  Boy howdy did my antennas go up as a "crowd" any time equals trouble.  I was ready to turn around and put in a quick sprint back home.  But as I looked more closely and listened carefully I discovered that it was a sizable herd of cows trying to get to the other side of the river!  So, I carefully slowed down and walked off the side of the road and made sure that none of the big horned cows took notice of me.  This gave me a really good excuse to slow down for one of those VO2 max miles which turned into a marathon pace mile.

Now, as far as my run went.  It was a sad attempt at some VO2 Max miles.  Did 2 w/u miles: 11:33 and 12:01 (did some walking in there too).  Then I was shooting to do 6, 1 mile repeats going all out.  Mile 1: 7:28 (not bad), Mile 2: started to go hard and I said FORGET IT!  Mile 2 ended up 8:25.  OK, forget the mile repeats.  Why not try some half mile repeats.  First half mile all out:  3:35 (not bad...though I do remember doing some 2:20's in High School but who's comparing).  Second half mile...FORGET IT!  Did another mile at 8:37 then one last one at 12:45.

Felt good to get out and run this morning.  I'm terribly jet lagged and not sleeping well, but hopefully that will change soon.  Did a 6 mile loop first 2.92 miles AP was 9:50 and the next 3.05 miles AP was 9:25.

Felt great to smell the Arizona desert.

Well, this morning started out good.  Was out running by 5am and it was relatively cool.  Enjoyed running not far from the base of the Catalina mountains.  Breath taking view.  I ran just over 5 miles at an AP of 10:30.  It was nice.  A bit hilly but nice.  I arrived at the nearby High School and did 2 miles at marathon pace on the track...9:27 and 9:16, then started the 5.18 miles back home.  After 3 miles towards home I was toast.  My legs were tired and I didn't want to push it so I went into a Starbucks and asked to use their phone and called my husband who came and picked me up.  Just didn't want to push any more.  Combination of fatigue from jet lag and I didn't eat very well yesterday and boy howdy did I feel it. Plus I'm still not sleeping through the night...waking up at 3am and not able to get back to sleep.  Live and learn.  I'm fueling my body well today!  And also making sure I'm drinking enough water so that I'm well hydrated for the marathon...a week from tomorrow!  We'll be driving to CA on Thursday next week.  At least AZ and CA are in the same time zone!  Well, I'm FINALLY going to unpack the suitcases...happy running!

I need to make this brief for the moment as I'm very tired and my stomach is not happy.  But, I'm still in the stage of 'I can't believe it'.  If these race results are official, I qualified for Boston!  I screamed, I laughed, and I cried.  More details later.

OK...here's a bit more info. about the race and experience.  The weather today was perfect for running the marathon.  I started running at 6:52 am and the temp was about 56 outside.  When I finished 4 hours later the temp was about 63.  I ran this marathon taking walk breaks every 4 minutes with the break lasting 45 seconds.  The race had a record number of runners for the event and it was indeed congested.  My target pace was between 9:00 and 9:15 per mile.  The first 7.6 miles my AP was 9:12, next 5.5 miles AP was 8:54, next 6.9 miles AP was 9:14 and the last 6.2 miles my AP was 10:10.  I was pleased with the my pace for warm up at 9:12 and the 8:54 AP dropped as a result of some down hills.  The next 6.9 miles had lots of ups which were followed by downs, but I just seem to remember all the ups!  But, it went well.  During the 3rd part of the marathon, came across an elderly man that was shooting for a sub 4 marathon and he saw that we were taking walk breaks so he hung out with us for a while an actually pushed up our pace a bit.  It helped my to get through all of those hills and he was encouraging me that I was going to reach my goal.  I think he was probably my angel, but because of the push through the hills boy howdy did I feel it the last 3 to 4 miles of the marathon.  You can see that my pace dropped significantly and that probably occurred around mile 23.  Around mile 23 I hit the wall.  My legs didn't cramp, but they were toast.  As I walked through one of the water stations I took some water and thought I'd have some GU to see if that would help me get through the last 3 miles.  I was even starting to see black spots.  I tried to keep moving forward and kept glancing at my watch, calculating if I was really going to be able to do this.  The last mile, once I got back on the Embarcadero road, I just grit my teeth and pressed on.  When I saw the finish line I found some more grit from somewhere and just kept on going.  I stopped my watch after I crossed the timing mechanism, glanced at it and I couldn't believe that it looked like I made it!

In comparison to the other SFMarathons that I've run, I could really tell that I was much better trained.  It really helped my a lot through my training to refer to several of the blogs on this website.  Thanks to Sno, Carolyn and Bonnie.  You probably didn't know that you helped, but you did!  I benefited from your experience, training programs, and encouragement.

Today is the 'day after' and I'm feeling pretty good.  As Sno says, I would say on a scale of 1-10, I have about level 5 monkey legs but the thing that is really bothersome to me right now is my stomach.  I'm eating and drinking to refuel and hydrate my body, but when my food gets to the intestinal level, I'm in trouble.  Don't know if it's because of pushing my body to its' limit or what.  I just do hope it will settle back down soon.

I have a question regarding the Boston Marathon now.  I've been reading their website and gathering some info and I was wondering if with a qualifying time in 2010 I could still use the time to run the Boston in April of 2012 (rather than 2011).  I suppose I could continue to work and train hard (which I will) to qualify again in 2011, but what if I don't make it in 2011?  Can I use my 2010 time?

Well, fellow bloggers, again, thanks for all of your encouraging words!

Oh...wish I could give you mile splits, but I don't have a Garmin...maybe one of these days!

Hi Barb - I don't have a Garmin, but have been thinking about getting one. Do you notice that it's heavy/bulky to wear, or did you get used to it fairly easily? Also, do you know how well it tracks distance when you're running under trees? (I'd like one mostly to track my distance, but it would also be nice to know my pace, even if my pace is skewed from all the hills I go up/down!). Thanks, Adele

From Barb on Thu, Aug 05, 2010 at 18:17:52 from 68.32.213.30

Hey CL (alias Adele :-)...oh and nice name! When I saw the size of the garmin in the window at the store I thought...it's too big! But I tried it on and it is quite light. So, it was no problem getting used to it and I have a pretty petite wrist. I have no idea if it tracks distance when you're running under trees. I'm hoping it will work in West Africa! Don't know how satellites work out there or how well. We shall see. I, too, like to use it for tracking distance and I like knowing what my pace is. I feel like I have some automatic accountability now. I really like it. I also got the watch from REI (recommendation from Sno) as they give a life time guarantee on the watch. I couldn't pass that up. Good luck!

From Barb on Thu, Aug 05, 2010 at 18:20:21 from 68.32.213.30

Thanks for the useful information, especially about REI and their guarantees. And, the discussion forum brought out some good points as well. It is good to hear you easily adapted to wearing the garmin as I, too, have fairly small wrists. Hope you feel better soon. - Adele

Nice run this morning but a bit tough.  The area I live in is all ups and downs and it seemed like this morning was more ups than downs.  I'm also doing some research with my running shoes.  I wear orthotics and my left heal got quite bruised with so much running and pounding and I wasn't in a place to get new pads.  I made some modifications and it worked OK.  First think I did when I got stateside was get new padding on the orthotics.  The guy who did the work tried something different (NEVER a good idea a week before a race) and they definitely had more padding, but my shoe no longer fit.  So, I thought I would try the same shoe only a wide size.  My feet hurt after walking and stand for an hour.  So, went back to the office and asked him to do the padding the exact same way as before.  That was much better.  Now I've been trying running in a 2 different pair of shoes, one regular and one wide.  I have issues with loosing toenails regularly so I though maybe going to a wide might help.  I'm coming to the conclusion that the wide doesn't feel right on my foot.  Shoe feels too big.  The regular width feels good, but there are again toe nail issues.  BUT, my heal is feeling much better and I think it actually feels better, took, in the regular width shoe.  I need to get another pair or 2 before we leave to take with me.

 oh...today's run.  Here are the splits:  10:42, 10:13, 10:04, 9:17, 9:42, 9:29, 9:47, 10:09

Are you a heel striker? I used to be but I changed to mid/fore-foot. I used Thomas Miller's Programmed To Run, but Chi Running is good too. This was about 4 years ago and I still run this way. Just a thought. Glad you got the orthotic sorted out!

My second day out after being sick.  It was hard to get myself out the door.  I wanted to be a bum.  But, I went anyway.  First mile was nice and easy.  My plan was to take it easy again.  Well, after about a mile and a half, and older man ran by me going sub 9 miles and I thought I'd pick it up a bit.  Then a bit later, a woman around my age passed by and of course the competitor in me kicked in.  I stayed with her for a bit until she turned off and so, I just kept the pace up and finished my run.  Felt good.  Here are the splits:  11:05, 9:05, 9:17, 9:29, 9:33, 9:44 (for .87m).  AP 9:42

Hi Barb,

It sounds like you felt good and ran strong yesterday, so I'm guessing after your recent illness, and recent blazing fast marathon :) your body just wants to appreciate another recovery day! Hope any sickness related effects quickly dissipate.

Well, it was one of those mornings running.  Not so good.  I thought I'd get in a medium length run before leaving to enjoy the freedom of running outside a compound.  I think 2 factors contributed to to this:  1) I ran hard Sun, Mon, Tues.  I just didn't have enough recovery time.  2) I think I started out a bit dehydrated in that I hadn't drank a lot of water during the previous 24 hours.  Also, I hadn't eaten much the day before either.  So, I definitely paid for it.  When I started out, there was a pretty good head wind.  I thought, no problem, that means a tail wind when I return.  I thought I would go a total of 10-12 miles.  At mile 5 out, I was already feeling more tired than usual, but I thought no problem since I'd have a tail wind home.  At 5.5 miles I said forget, I'm turning around.  Well, I turned around thinking I could settle into a decent pace back and my body was telling me, no way!  And, when I did turn around it seemed like the wind died down and of course it was getting warmer and warmer.  There was probably a bit of a tail wind, but it sure didn't seem like it.  Oh well.  Here are my splits:  10:46, 10:09, 10:20, 10:20, 10:48, 10:37, 10:03, 10:10, 10:01, 10:56, 11:23   AP:  10:30

I'm calling it "runners wind," when the expected tailwind doesn't show up. That happens to me all the time. Or worse, the wind shifts and the morning goes on and it's all headwind, all through the run. Good job hanging in there! Where are you off to next? Do you find the moving around a challenge or do you enjoy it?

From Barb on Thu, Aug 26, 2010 at 13:39:14 from 68.32.213.30

Hey Sno...Well, I guess I don't mind too much moving around. Last year was an exceptional year in that we were evacuated from Guinea because of political unrest. So we were in Mali for 9 months and that was not in the plan. Our home is in Conakry, Guinea (West Africa) and we'll be there from September through June. That's the usual plan. Then we do 2 weeks in Holland and about 5-6 weeks in the US. It will be nice to be 'home' for 10 months. The only MAJOR bummer is that it's not an optimal running environment. For safety reasons I only run on a compound. Six laps around is a mile. My hill workouts are stairs in the office building that I work (2 flights). I think my qualifying for Boston was because I was in a much better training environment in Mali. Oh well. Working on being creative. I'm very thankful for iPOD's...music and talk shows, keeps me sane! Glad your recovery is going well. When's your next marathon?

Took it easy today.  Yesterday a neighbor brought over one of my favorite African dishes, rice with leaf sauce.  The leaf sauce is cooked with palm oil so as you might imagine it's rather heavy on the stomach.  So, I ran 'heavy' today.  The sauce sure was good, though!  Also got a bit of a surprise...my husband takes the kids to school in the morning, and I go and run.  Well, 30 minutes later he returned with the 2 kids!  They start school an hour and a half later on Wednesday's.  Ugh.  New schedule.  Change.  I had to take the girls to school after I ran.  On the way I asked my middle schooler (her 3rd day of middle school ever...6th grade) so what time does your schedule say you start?  OH NO!, she replied.  I started at 8am! (an hour and 10 minutes earlier).  There are guards outside the school gates and where you enter into elementary school is different than middle school and my husband didn't think to ask the middle school guard what time school started over there.  So, I had to explain to the school what happened so that my middle schooler could enter school an hour and 20 minutes late.  They showed us grace and my middle schooler was so relieved.  We're recovering....oh...yes...I did run this morning....

It did rain AGAIN while running this morning, but at least this morning it was a slow drizzle.  these were the slow, palm oil saucy, splits:  11:08, 10:58, 11:19, 10:47, 10:44  AP:  11:00

So here's another thing we have in common: middle school age daughter -- only mine is starting 8th grade. What a crazy morning! Time to laugh at life and move on.

So are you running in warm rain then? I hate that, but we actually get *very little* rain in the summer here. Now it's starting up, but the temps are down low enough that you can put on a nylon shell and be relatively dry and not too hot.

From Barb on Fri, Sep 10, 2010 at 10:15:58 from 81.85.252.242

Yes, we do have warm rain here. Even running in the rain after 5 miles I'll loose about 2 pounds of water/sweat. Such is life just off the equator. So, you have a middle schooler too...my MS is the oldest and my youngest just started 4th grade. They sure are lots of fun! Last night was the battle of enormous spiders. After not living in our house for about 11 months, the spiders have flourished. Granted they are 'friendly' spiders in that they eat mosquitoes which helps us to not get malaria. But, they were a bit too much for the girls last night. My husband manned the bug spray while I got his big sandal and started swinging away! Needless to say, 3 LARGE spiders are no longer with us and we somehow managed to get some sleep last night!

well, I walked out the door without my Garmin this morning.  Mais enfin!  Ugh.  Too many things going on....snacks for school, lunches for school, getting them out the door by 7:30am.  My middle schooler is staying at school from 8 to 5 today and she's not so sure about this.  She's also wanting to be the class representative so was having to do a speech today.  Anyway, I forgot my GARMIN!  I did about 5.1 miles and my AP was about 10:27.  I'm a slow bum today.  I did shred this morning and I think I sweat 2 pounds off in 30 minutes.  I'm not exaggerating.  Anyway, back to work...

Hey there friend...yeah you Sno...don't think too many others check out my blog. I saw on your response to tout le monde that you talked a bit about weight. When I was thinking about the BQ for me and I've narrowed it down to 2 key factors that helped me to shave 29 minutes off my previous time. First, my mileage base went from about 35 miles a week to between 50 and 60 miles a week. The second factor was some weight loss. I worked to drop about 5-7 pounds during the 6 months prior to the race this summer. Race day I was about 6 pounds lighter than previous marathons. So, don't know where you're at with your weight, but it was definitely a key factor for me. I'm 5'5" and right now am about 132. Race day I was 127. I'm going to try to get back to 125-127 over the next several months. I've been a bum and enjoying food! Anyway...thanks for the comment and have a GREAT day! I would post my run today but I left my GARMIN at home with my 'history' of the run :-)

From Snoqualmie on Fri, Oct 01, 2010 at 09:57:13 from 24.18.192.33

Merci, mon ami! C'est vrai - je sais!!! I have always thought that a BQ would be more attainable at my "dream weight." I'm not saying what that weight is - lol! But it's less than 10 pounds away.

That nagging suspicion does continue to plague me: that I am just "not worthy" -- I'm not trying to be dramatic or self-pitying but the qualifying standards were created for a reason: they only want a certain sort of athlete to come to Boston and I do question whether I'm that sort. I don't have the "no pain no gain" work ethic. ;)

But back to the weight issue... As I'm sure you know, we are in the minority at our age, to be as slender as we are (at least in the states - I don't know about Africa). I'm not making excuses but with people saying how "skinny" I am all the time I think I get lolled into complacency and lose my drive to get to the weight I want. But all you have to do is go up stairs carrying ten pounds of laundry and you can see what a drag it creates.

So THANK YOU for sharing your experience. I know it will give me hope and motivation. Since I already eat low-carb, all I have to do is cut back portions a little and the weight does come off. I just need the inspiration to do it! The higher mileage part is easy, since that's my preference anyway.

It's also very kind of you to bring it up over here on your blog, where we are more "private." lol

Are you running SF next summer again? And are you going to Boston in April? Again, many thanks!

From Barb on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 03:38:35 from 81.85.252.242

Ha...YOU ARE WORTHY! I can still hear the voice of my brother-in-law saying "you can do it Barb, you can do it...you'll see". I have NO doubt you'll get there...in time.

Well, I found out last weekend that a church that supports us in AZ is buying my ticket to run Boston!!!! I still can't believe it. So, yes, I will be running the Boston. I have to admit that I REALLY wanted you to qualify for selfish reasons...would have been fun to meet you there! And yes, I will do the SF marathon as well. That's usually the only marathon I get in every year. My brother and family live out that way so it's nice to see them and have the "goal" of running another marathon. Up for a hilly marathon in 2011?

From Snoqualmie on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 14:11:40 from 24.18.192.33

Thank you so much for the encouragement!

That is so cool about the Boston "sponsorship!" Are you missionaries? (Will you still be my friend when you find out I'm a "Jewish" atheist? I'll be yours!)

The fact that you BQ'd on that hilly course is even more impressive! I know SF very well (lived there for a year in 1980), and would LOVE to run it. I worry about the hills, and also the potential heat (with my nausea issue). How did you find the hills? I like the fact that the course seems pretty flat in the last miles. I do well on hills, but when they come after mile 20 they often "do me in."

From Barb on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 05:08:44 from 81.85.252.242

Well hey there my 'still' friend :-) YES! You can still be my friend even though you're a Jewish atheist! I suppose I could say that I'm you're adopted gentile sister :-) How's that one! Anyway, yes, my husband and I are missionaries. I was actually out here as a single for quite a few years and met my Dutch husband here. So, life is always an adventure here and it's NEVER dull.

Anyway, problem with nausea hey. I get that when I get overheated. I make sure I start the SFM marathon as close to the gun as possible so that I can finish before the sun breaks through! I usually cheat in that I try to get in an early wave, so I give a faster time that I could ever run so that I can start earlier :-) The hills on the course are tough but doable. If you're used to hills I think you would do fine. The course isn't too hilly the last 2-3 miles. I find that I ritually feel pretty good and strong until the last 2-3 miles. It was ONLY gut wrenching determination that got me to the finish line this summer. I had an 'angel' that ran up next to me the last 3 miles...60+ year old guy name Gale and he just kept me going and encouraging me. So, my personal opinion... I think you need to plan to do the SFM in 2011!

From Snoqualmie on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 11:18:08 from 24.18.192.33

Alright, my sister! Let's do it! They don't have the exact date up on the website as far as I can see, and I have to clear this with Mr. Sno once they do. But I think it would be a lot of fun, even though I may get a slow time from the hills or the potential heat. But as I described on my blog, I'm tired of picking every marathon with the sole purpose of finding that BQ.

Does the starting corral really make a big difference? Is the race really huge? I will need advice when it's time to register.

From Snoqualmie on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 11:19:56 from 24.18.192.33

Oh my goodness! Sorry to keep posting but I just saw this: http://www.thesfmarathon.com/the-race/start-wave-times.php So the first thing that strikes me is: "the race starts before 6? Really?!? Yay!!!!!" Secondly, That's a big delay between waves, but I guess not out of the ordinary for such a large field. So I'm wondering if a fib of 3:44 would be about right? What do you usually enter?

From Snoqualmie on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 14:17:13 from 24.18.192.33

Later that same day.... Oh dear! - I see now that the SF marathon takes place the same weekend as the World Harp Congress in Vancouver, to which I have already somewhat committed myself. It's a big event and to have it practically in my backyard is a precious opportunity. I will have to make it 2012 then. :(

Well, as I looked and followed your comments in my email inbox, I went from excitement to oh bummer in a matter of minutes. That would have been fun, but like you said, maybe in 2012. So, you're a harpist. Cool! I'm a former violinist. Haven't played much in many years, but before hitting college I had to choose between pursuing athletics or being a violinist...I went into athletics. BUT, I still have a love for music that runs deep. Hits my soul.

FYI, re: wave for the SFM...I try to get in wave 2 :-) There's a big difference finishing at 10 rather than 11!

I am bummed too! I am having a really hard time picking 2011 marathons. The only one I KNOW I want to run is CIM in December 2011. SF looked like perfect timing, and I would really enjoy meeting you.

Once a violinist, always a violinist! My husband is a very good violinist (not for a living); that's how we met actually.

Wave 2 - I'm not sure I have the guts to line up for that (imposter syndrome). But I will if you will! lol

From Barb on Wed, Oct 06, 2010 at 05:59:28 from 81.85.252.242

OK,this past year I signed up for wave 3 and thought I'd sneak into wave 2 (that's what I've done in the past). BUT, I couldn't get away with it this time! My brother had signed up for wave 2 (he ran the half and his time was around 2:30, so you can imagine that he did fudge a bit). Wave 3 worked out fine, but it was tough thinking...it better not get too hot! There are LOTS of runners in this marathon and half marathon, and signing up for whatever wave is just paperwork...so it seems anyway. I'm planning on signing up for wave 2 for 2011!

I think if you were in an actual race, you'd see a huge drop in pace and that's what you should go by. Training is training. We'll seldom feel our real power on a training run. Hey Sno...I hear ya. Though, my fastest mile last spring was around 7:15 and that says I could run around a 4:06 marathon and that's about where I was at. I've noticed that training here in Guinea is definitely different than Mali. It's so much more humid and tropical here. The minimum temp I run in is 70 degrees and the min humidity is probably around 50%. So, maybe that slows me down. But no excuses! I'm still working on trimming down a bit and building some muscle strength AND working on form to avoid injuries. FYI heel is much better!

I was very, very tired today. Last nights hard rain woke me up and then I realized I left the car windows down so I had to run out and quickly close things up...then the puppy had to go out and do his business a bit later. I made it through the workout but I was just plain tired.

wu: 1.50 miles (10:29) ran for 30 seconds hard and then easy for 30 seconds - 10 reps...sort of.  The 30 second distances I didn't want to figure out for distance, so I'm just doing an easy mile entry even though a bit of it wasn't so easy.

Nice easy 5 miles.  Forgot my garmin so no splits this morning.  Just some FYI of what's going on in our neck of the world...had the first ever democratic presidential elections last week Sunday.  Results have been trickling in.  Lots of ethnic tensions taking place between the 2 candidates.  Results are supposed to come out today.  Things have heated up in town so they 'closed the doors' of our girls' school with all the students inside.  This happens on a rare occasion when tensions and sometimes rioting takes place.  It's for their safety and the safety of all the parents that have to travel on city roads to get kids after school.  So, we can't go get our kids until the French Ambassador says it's OK to do so (it's a French school).  I was at least able to get to the store and get a few supplies this morning before they closed.

Well, had a bit of a pm run.  FYI...we were finally able to pick up our girls from school without incident.  Announcement of the winner of the elections should be any time now.  Hopefully things won't heat up too much.  Here are my splits:  10:21, 10:34, 10:16, then walked for .37 miles.

HI Barb! Looks like your training is going well. I still really enjoying and most weeks I can get 4 or five runs in. I have just stopped blogging about them to save a bit of time. Schoolwork is pretty demanding and it is term paper season so this week I was only able to squeeze three runs in. But I am trying to stick to a training schedule that will have me ready to run another half mid-january. I found a great race series in Washington that charge $10 a race! So hopefully I can do a couple 10km's aswell. Thanks so much for being a running inspiration and keep up the hard work!
